Within the scope of the PECE 201 – Alternative Approaches and Models in Early Childhood Education course, conducted by Assistant Professor Fatma Yalçın from the Department of Early Childhood Education at TED University, our pre-service teachers visited Meraklı Kedi Kindergarten.
As part of this field visit, teacher candidates had the opportunity to observe the democratic school model discussed theoretically in the course and its practical applications in the field. During the visit, practices related to the active roles of teachers, children, and families in the school’s decision-making processes, the consideration of children’s preferences and choices in the planning of the daily routine, and the monthly agendas and functioning of the school council were examined.
The pre-service teachers also had the opportunity to observe how children, while having a voice in the management and operation of the school, are academically supported.
This experience made a significant contribution to pre-service teachers’ understanding of how the democratic school model is implemented in early childhood education through concrete examples and how this approach can be connected to their future professional practice.
